The Prizes Island Produce Show - Clean Sweep for Barbara 2009

People and companies kindly donated perpetual trophies for the Show.

The Co-chomunn Bharraidh Salver for the Garden Section, Sarah's Office Quaich for the Industrial Section and Barratlantic Cup for the Croft and Fishing Section.

The winners of these trophies are the people who get the most points in that section.  Rosettes from 1st to 6th are also awarded.  The more classes a person enters means a greater chance of winning a trophy.

The points in each section are then combined and the person with the highest score wins the Macneil and Mrs Macneil of Barra Champion Shield.

On the 5th September the rain was pouring down outside Castlebay Community Hall but inside there was a buzz of excitement and anticipation as exhibitors prepared their items for the show.

Seventy-two people of all ages took part in the open sections (Garden, Industrial, Fishing and Crofting) and 82 children took part in the children’s section.  There were 366 exhibits with the best supported section being the industrial with a vast array of baking and crafts.  The children really worked hard too, with many decorated wooden spoons, pictures, cress, baking, crafts and Lego models.  The judges Hector MacAulay, Veronica Beaton, Jimmy Ferguson and Mary Greenacre had a difficult job deciding on the prize-winners.

This year there were new prizes for the best exhibit in each open section and the Best in the Show.  This prize was kindly donated by Hector MacNeil Coaches.  The winners were:- Garden: Mary Greenacre for her vase of a selection of herbs, Industrial: Kristie Boyd for her sponge, Croft and Fishing: Karen MacLean for her box of local island produce.  Overall winner of the Best Exhibit in Show was Karen MacLean with her box which contained baking, crafts, flowers and home-grown fruit and vegetables.

This year the Show Points Champion and winner of the MacNeil and Mrs MacNeil of Barra Shield was Barbara Carmichael with a massive 218 points and the Reserve Champion was Sarah MacLean with 120 points.  Barbara worked really hard and entered a total of 39 classes - a very worthy winner and in fact she managed a clean sweep of all the open section trophies.  Congratulations to everyone who won rosettes.

When the doors opened locals and visitors streamed in to see all the wonderful exhibits and who had won the prizes.  Someone described the show as coming into a very nice shop with the best of the best on display.  It was wonderful to see all the local produce in the same place and we should all be very proud of what we as an island produce.

At the end of the show the produce was boxed and auctioned off.  All the money raised on the day will go towards the running of the show, setting up a gardening club and school growing projects.
